The R/V Rachel K. Goodwin is a 110-foot offshore supply vessel, originally built in 1979 by Graham in Bayou La Batre, Alabama. Acquired by Goodwin Marine Services in 2019, it was repurposed for ocean-going research tasks. The vessel features a beam of 26 feet and operates at speeds between 9 to 12 knots. It boasts a clear deck space measuring 62 by 24 feet, capable of handling a deck cargo of 7 long tons. Equipped with two 16V92 Detroit main engines and two 371 Detroit 30 kW generators, it has a fuel capacity of 22,506 gallons, ballast water capacity of 50,531 gallons, and potable water capacity of 1,500 gallons, supplemented by a watermaker producing 1,200 gallons per day.
Deck equipment includes a PALFINGER knuckle boom crane with a 3,500-pound capacity at 37 feet, a custom-built detachable hydraulic A-frame with a 27-foot vertical clearance, and a Pullmaster H25 winch with a 25,000-pound capacity. Accommodations are designed for 22 persons, offering 22 berths—including 4 staterooms—a full galley, lounge with TV, heating and air conditioning, and two heads with showers. A 130-square-foot client lab space is equipped with ample power supply, storage, deck pass-thru, and bridge communications.
The vessel’s electronics suite comprises a FURUNO LS-6100 fathometer, three iCOM IC-M330 VHF radios, two SH VLH-3000 loud hailers, two FURUNO GP32 GPS units, a SIMRAD AP70 Mk2 autopilot, a FURUNO M1935 radar, a FURUNO NX-300 Navtex, an iCOM IC-M803 SSB radio, HYPACK survey software, and a JRC JHS-182 AIS system. The R/V Rachel K. Goodwin is recognized for its comfort and versatility in marine research expeditions.
